This Part of Penelope's Book Story Has No Place on Bridgerton
Earlier this year, it was announced that the third season of Bridgerton would mainly focus on Colin and Penelope's love story.
This took many people by surprise, as in Julia Quinn's romance novels, their story starts later on. Although we don't know why Netflix has decided to switch it up, there is one part of Penelope's storyline that will have to change, too. Curious to find out which part? Well, read on!
Bridgerton is known for bringing its A-game when it comes to romance. During the first season, we saw Daphne and Simon Basset's tumultuous courtship. In the second season, it was Kate Sharma and Anthony Bridgerton that got the spotlight. But for the third season, showrunners are planning to take Colin and Penelope's relationship to the next level.
So far, we've only seen Penelope secretly having a crush on Colin in both previous seasons. And by the end of season 2, we witnessed Colin making it clear that he'd never court her, as he didn't see her that way, which Penelope also overheard.
Because of the apparent lack of interest on his part, some viewers were stunned when they found out those two were going to be the main couple of season 3. Those who had read the books knew that this relationship was going to happen, of course.
However, everyone expected this romance to take place later on in the show, as their story doesn't technically start until book 4 in the novel series. But that's not the only thing that got fans talking.
What some may not know is that a big part of Penelope's story in the books was a glow-up, which viewers always love to see. However, that might not be the case for her story.
See, the thing is, Penelope's transformation in the book is based on her losing nearly 30 lbs, and it's only then that Colin suddenly starts noticing her. Suggesting that she needs to lose weight in order to be loved and appreciated is obviously problematic, as it's not exactly body-positive.
And although it's somewhat significant to her character in the books, we can see why Netflix would be concerned about sending the wrong message here.
The news about the upcoming season has also sparked discussions among fans. All of them seem to agree that Penelope's character arc is more about finding inner strength in a society where people are obsessed with looks and that it would be wholesome to see Colin fall for her personality.
Some add that in case the showrunners did want to follow the books and show a transformation, a great way to do it would be to showcase a change in the way she carries and expresses herself. Others think that they could accent her beauty with more flattering gowns, hair, and makeup.
We don't know what exactly Netflix has in store for us yet, but this part of the story will most likely need an adjustment!
