2025 proves that science fiction is still one of the most popular genres in the film industry. Dune and Godzilla are replaced by a new installment of Avatar from James Cameron, new blockbusters – the third installment of Tron and the sixth installment of Predator – and dystopian satires from Edgar Wright and Bong Joon-ho.
1. Tron: Ares
Release Date: October 10, 2025
15 years after the release of the previous movie, Joseph Kosinski's Tron: Legacy, Joachim Rønning's Tron: Ares will hit the screens.
The events of the third Tron will unfold in reality, Ares will come into contact with the human world to carry out a particularly important mission. The film's soundtrack will be composed by Nine Inch Nails, led by Trent Reznor, who has scored Pixar's Soul, the superhero miniseries Watchmen and Luca Guadagnino's Challengers.
2. Mickey 17
Release Date: April 18, 2025
The premiere of the sci-fi blockbuster Mickey 17 from the creator of the Oscar-winning Parasite Bong Joon-ho has been postponed several times, all due to the Hollywood actors' strike that took place in the fall of 2023. As a result, the movie's release date was moved from March 2024 to January 2025 and then to April 18, 2025.
The plot of the movie is based on the novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton. The main character is a participant in a dangerous mission to colonize a new planet. After death – natural or accidental – his consciousness is duplicated and placed in a new synthetic body.
3. Predator: Badlands
Release Date: November 7, 2025
The sci-fi blockbuster Badlands, according to the director himself, will focus on the Predator himself, who has only appeared as a villain in the previous installments. Director Dan Trachtenberg also promised viewers an emotional story about a character who will not lose his animalistic grin.
The plot of Badlands will unfold in the future. At the center of the story will be two twin sisters with different characters, played by Elle Fanning.
4. The Running Man
Release Date: November 7, 2025
Edgar Wright is preparing a new movie based on Stephen King 's The Running Man, which will also be a remake of Michael Glaser's sci-fi thriller of the same name.
The story will be set in a dystopian future. The main character, 28-year-old Ben Richards, played by Glen Powell, decides to take part in a gruesome reality show to raise money for an operation for his seriously ill daughter.
5. Avatar: Fire and Ash
Release Date: December 19, 2025
We won't have to wait another ten years for the next Avatar movie. The third installment, subtitled Fire and Ash, is scheduled to premiere in December 2025 – just in time for Christmas.
The plot of the blockbuster will once again revolve around the family of Jake Sully, a former Marine who has joined the alien Na'vi people. In the third installment, audiences will be introduced to a new tribe on Pandora – the Ash Clan, or the fire version of the Na'vi.
Jake and his family must find a common language with their aliens, as well as rehabilitate the avatar of Miles Quaritch, in which the villain's consciousness still lives.
