Patty Jenkins Sets the Record Straight on Wonder Woman 3
Let's finally hear it from the director.
Amid the uncertainty that surrounds Warner Bros. and the DCU, the Wonder Woman franchise is perhaps in the most uncomfortable place, with reports recently suggesting that the third installment has been cancelled by the new leadership.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wonder Woman 3 does not quite fall in line with the Warner Bros. vision of the DCU future. However, there were no official comments from the franchise director, Patty Jenkins, — until now.
On Tuesday, Jenkins released an official statement regarding Wonder Woman's future, noting that she will "not allow inaccuracies to continue", and offering "facts".
"I originally left the Rogue Squadron after a long and productive development process when it became clear it couldn't happen soon enough and I did not want to delay WW3 any further," Jenkins said. "When I did, Lucasfilm asked me to consider coming back to RS after WW3, which I was honored to do, so I agreed. They made a new deal with me. In fact, I am still on it and that project has been in active development ever since."
Jenkins was quick to note she doesn't know whether Rogue Squadron will make it to screens, because "we never do until the development process is complete", but said she was looking forward to it.
The director also went on to refute the rumors that she was the one to "kill" Wonder Woman 3 or walk away from it.
"It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time," she said. "DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now."
Jenkins expressed her gratitude towards the members of her crew and made it clear she did not want the Wonder Woman journey to end on a negative note. DCU head James Gunn was quick to respond to the statement, confirming that "all of Peter and my interactions with you were only pleasant and professional."
Judging by the statement, Wonder Woman 3 might still happen at some point, just not in the long run, as Jenkins never explicitly said that the project has been shot down.
"Glad to know you did not walk away from the project. There are certain directors and actors chemistry studios should not mess with. I pray WB does not remove you from the project & Gal. That would be a huge mistake again on their part," Twitter user aepgm46 said.
Fans remain hopeful that Wonder Woman will return with Jenkins and Gal Gadot in charge; even though the franchise is not likely to come back in the coming years as the DCU goes through yet another big change.
Meanwhile, Jenkins remains involved in the making of Rogue Squadron — a Star Wars movie about the Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron that might supposedly come out between 2025 and 2027.
