2024's Most Unique Rom-Com With Hot Fuzz Star Is Now Available to Watch on Prime Video
British fantasy comedy about eternal love that turns the rules of the genre on their head.
Alice Lowe became famous as an actress in Edgar Wright's films. In 2016, the British actress made her directorial debut with Prevenge, a comedy-horror film about a killer who is eight months pregnant.
In the case of Timestalker Lowe not only directed, but also wrote and starred in the film.
What Is Timestalker About?
1688, the west of Scotland. Spinner Agnes falls in love with a heretic about to be executed. She tries to save him, but stumbles over an axe and dies. In 1793, Agnes is a bored English noblewoman who falls in love with a woodsman named Alex. Her angry husband threatens to kill them both.
In the 1980s, Alex is a popular singer and Agnes is a devoted fan living in Manhattan. Times and places change, but the unrequited love remains.
It is interesting that Agnes remembers her past lives perfectly and carries love from one incarnation to another. At the moment of death, a quick cut shows all the faces of the main character, combining several images.
Timestalker Is One of the Most Unusual Rom-Coms Released in Recent Years
Timestalker is one of the most unique romantic comedies of 2024. Agnes falls in love with the same man, and each time it leads to her death. The universe or God does not want the couple to be together.
But the main character persists, and fate, as if mocking her, brings Alex and Agnes together in an amazing way. Classic romances have accustomed us to love overcoming all obstacles, and the characters inevitably become infatuated with each other.
Lowe gracefully mocks this tired genre assumption and paints a funny picture when the heroine wants to be with the chosen one, but he does not reciprocate. And as time passes, nothing changes.
Timestalker Teaches Us That Sometimes It's Better to Move On
Agnes' pursuit takes a frightening turn – in the second half of the movie, the pop star's fan already resembles a stalker who will never let go of her beloved one.
The director has created an anti-romcom about eternal dislike, in which there is no "lived happily ever after," so all the canons of naive sentimental cinema are violated.
The viewer, along with Agnes and her entourage, is caught in an endless repetition. There is only one way out – to accept the impossibility of reciprocity on Alex's part and to look for love elsewhere.
