Yes, White Lotus Did Just Mess with Ted Lasso In Season 2 Premiere
As if the first episode was not too much already.
The White Lotus is quite a peculiar show that somehow embraces both a nonchalant holiday-ish vibe along with explicit nudity and creepiness, but excuse us, messing with Ted Lasso?
Because yes, the very first episode of the second season, The White Lotus appears to name-drop one of the most resonant shows by Apple TV. And what was a neat irony for some ended up being a trigger and almost an insult to others.
At some point in the episode, Aubrey Plaza's character Harper and other characters discuss their favorite movies and shows, and Meghann Fahy's Daphne reacts to someone watching Ted Lasso by saying that he's "such a good guy" and noting how she herself loves the show. What does Harper do? With a signature "I couldn't care less" look, she dryly responds with "I don't watch Ted Lasso."
The line was filled with so much condescendence that Ted Lasso fans immediately took to Twitter to shade The White Lotus back.

Others noted that not watching Ted Lasso is "not something to brag about", especially for a character in The White Lotus — the show that received controversial responses from fans over its lack of an actual story that is not always saved by characters' charisma and general atmosphere.
However, some seem to be ready to ditch their favorite show if it's Plaza who wants them to do so.
"I enjoyed Ted Lasso, but if Aubrey Plaza told me to walk into oncoming traffic, I'd ask her if she wanted surface roads or the interstate," Twitter user crawf34 said.
Another person seemed to appreciate the joke even while admitting its lack of subtext.
"White Lotus using Ted Lasso as a punchline to show how shallow and hollow one of the couples are is so funny," the user DionicioRT said. "That show is devoid of subtext for the most part but it can be pretty funny mostly because of the actors' performances."
One Ted Lasso fan seems to be ready to fully side with Daphne.
"Meghann Fahy in The White Lotus, I will watch Ted Lasso with you. I will ignore the news with you. I will let you Facetime the kids while we are on a beautiful Italian vacation and you will not hear a single complaint about it from me," the user zoenone0none said.
Besides, there was a plethora of people who applauded The White Lotus for shading Ted Lasso, claiming that this is "representation" of those who believe that the Apple TV show about an overly optimistic football coach is "overrated".
The White Lotus season 2 premiered on HBO Max on Sunday, October 30. Consisting of seven episodes, the show will release new episodes weekly through December 11. Meanwhile, season 3 of Ted Lasso is currently filming in Richmond.
