The One Thing Almost Every Ted Lasso Fan Agrees On
With Season 2 of Ted Lasso over, it is the eyebrows-raising romance between AFC Richmond owner Rebecca Welton (Hannah Waddingham) and the football club's defender Sam Obisanya (Toheeb Jimoh) on everyone's mind.
Right from the start of the award-winning TV series the writers wanted us to believe that chemistry between Rebecca and Ted (remember the morning cookies/biscuits thing?) will end up in a romantic relationship. No. We were caught off guard! It's actually Sam who Rebecca ends up with in season 2 – much to some viewers' disappointment.
In this summer interview with Half Four With, both Hannah Waddingham and Toheeb Jimoh shared how they felt about their characters' on-and-off relationship. Waddingham said that "the most important thing for me and Toheeb was to make it not just about the age difference, or the silliness of it, but to go, 'actually, these two really bring out the sunshine each other'."
Jimoh echoed his partner saying that when he read the script he wanted to make this work and make this plausible. He also believes that the romance is the win for Season 2.
In another interview with Deadline, Jimoh said he would not "spill the beans" preferring not to open up on the plot. Still, he did say that Season 3 will show how Sam's love affair with Rebecca unfolds and what it will turn to in the end.
"It will be really interesting no matter what side of the fence you're on, whether you're a TedBecca fan or SamBecca fan," he said.
But what exactly do Ted Lasso fans think of the relationships between the AFC Richmond boss and her subordinate star player? Naturally, redditors have different opinions but most of them agree that no matter what, just give love a chance!
The one thing almost every Ted Lasso fan agrees on is Sam and Rebecca both being adults who can make their own decisions, so who are we to judge? Others, however, don't think that the age difference is that bad, but it is the power dynamic between the team owner and the player that does make the relationship inappropriate after all. Still, as one fan pointed out, unless Rebecca is going to Ted and demand special treatment for Sam, it really doesn't matter.
A bunch of redditors have brought in the topic of double standards: as no one mentions Rupert and Bex's age difference and that they have a child in wedlock. Some redditors believe that Rebecca and Sam happened to be "the healthy version" of Bex and Rupert.
Ted Lasso Season 3 production is plagued by problems. The release will not happen in the fall of 2022 as was the original plan; it's likely we'll get new episodes sometime in 2023 instead.
