And it's family-friendly.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was released on December 20, 2024. The box office victories of the previous installments of the hedgehog's adventures over Birds of Prey and Morbius were dubious achievements, but the defeat of Disney and their prequel about Mufasa is a sign that the hedgehog has finally taken shape by the third installment.

The creators managed to build a cinematic universe of the SEGA mascot, despite some problems with the approach to humor and the non-canonicality of some moments.

What Is Sonic the Hedgehog 3 About?

The plot of the third movie for the first time relies heavily on the video game source and decides to freely retell Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic has become friends with Knuckles and Tails, but their friendly idyll is suddenly interrupted by Shadow.

A gloomy hedgehog with the voice of Keanu Reeves, Shadow has been imprisoned on an island near Japan for 50 years, but with the help of Dr. Robotnik, he manages to escape and, together with a mad scientist, begins to take revenge on the world for the death of a loved one – a girl named Maria.

Movie Does a Great Job of Adapting the Game's Storyline to the Big Screen

The movie competently retcons and adapts the events of the original video games, and the writers never go overboard with fan service, delivering it in small doses of excellent quality.

In this version, Shadow is simply an alien hedgehog who landed on Earth, rather than a life form artificially created from the DNA of the space demon Black Doom.

Robotnik's space base was moved to Earth for convenience, the ridiculous lizard boss from Sonic Adventure 2 was removed and replaced with a more logical villain, and the almost familial relationship between the dark hedgehog and Maria was revealed in more detail.

Movie Has Minor Flaws, but They Are Outweighed by Its Obvious Advantages

Perhaps the story of the confrontation between Sonic and his antipode is too reminiscent of the conflict with Knuckles from the previous installment, and Shadow does not get much screen time, but against the backdrop of a number of successful decisions, these flaws are not always noticeable.

The creators of the Hedgehog films did everything right and are now reaping the rewards: the post-credits scenes with new characters are impressive in the best tradition of the MCU 's first phase movies and make you eagerly await the next installment.
