The One Grey's Anatomy Scene That Changed The Show Completely
One of the biggest reasons fans love Grey's Anatomy is the drama, and the show has never failed to deliver.
It could be a patient flatlining on the operating table and surgeons racing against time to save them, fierce rivalries between interns, or a character's drama inside and outside the hospital. No matter what it is, every episode keeps fans on the edge of their seats, but one dramatic scene may have been too much for viewers.
In a single scene, the show took a dark turn from the day-to-day lives of the surgeons and harmless hospital drama to the deaths of two favorite characters.
In the 8th season finale, a group of the hospital's top surgeons board a plane but never reach their destination. They are involved in a devastating crash that lands them in the middle of the woods where they must fight to stay alive.
There is blood and broken bones and a sense of absolute panic as they try to help each other, with the characters sustaining a variety of injuries ranging from spinal injuries to internal injuries, fractures, and dislocations. One of the show's longest-running characters, Lexie, is the worst, having been crushed by a piece of the plane.
There is nothing the others can do besides hold her hand and tell her they love her as she dies, still trapped. This moment shocked viewers to the core, and from there, things continued to get darker.
It is a while before help arrives, and viewers can only sit and watch as they huddle desperately together trying to stay awake and hold on to hope.
When the show picks up in the 9th season, the atmosphere still feels dark and heavy. The main characters are mourning the death of one of their own, at the same time trying to regain function from the injuries they sustained. Star surgeon Derek loses mobility in his hand, and Arizona Robbins has to amputate her leg which leaves her bitter.
The characters all seem to have fallen into dark holes of their own, and it is difficult to watch as everyone becomes negatively affected. It seems like things will never be the same.
Just as they seem to be recovering, another favorite surgeon, Mark Sloan, dies due to complications from his injuries. To top it off, news comes out that the hospital will be liable for the plane crash and have to pay out the surgeons.
To save the hospital, the surgeons band together to purchase the hospital and rename it Grey-Sloan Memorial to honor their fellow surgeons.
Although things in the world of Grey's Anatomy did eventually return to a sort of normal, after the events of the plane crash and the aftermath, the show lost its lighthearted spark and continued moving in the direction of darker drama, with some fans enjoying the more serious take and others missing everything that existed before the crash.
