Since the show often touches upon serious topics like life, death, and intricate relationships, delivering important messages is part of the deal. And the medical drama has taught its viewers many life lessons throughout the years, no doubt.
However, lately, fans have been missing the entertainment side.
The hit series first premiered in 2005, so it has been around for nearly two decades and is still going strong. It made waves around the world, with its plot being centered around the lives of surgical interns, attending physicians, and residents and their journey to becoming doctors – all while balancing professional and personal relationships.
What has made the show truly stand out is the way it explores many critical issues, such as racism and sexism. Needless to say, this makes for a very interesting and, oftentimes, educating viewing.
However, it's now becoming clear that many fans of the show miss older seasons, and the reason behind it is simple – there used to be more intriguing cases and drama. The doctors used to be more competitive, and interns used to fight for their seats at the table.
Sure, the writers always tied some important lessons into the episodes, but it used to be more seamless, and fans never felt like it took away from the main storylines.
These days, on the other hand, it seems like every episode is an attempt to teach us a lesson. And don't get us wrong, the show is definitely progressive, and we're very much here for it. However, most people already know that society often sucks, and to remind ourselves of that, all we need to do is turn on the news or even simply go outside.
Sometimes, all we want to do is put our feet up and watch an entertaining episode of our favorite series to get our minds off things. That said, all fans seem to agree that the messages the producers try to convey are undoubtedly significant.
So, it's not necessarily the lessons that aren't received well, but it's the delivery that leaves a lot to be desired. It all feels a bit forced and not as natural within the story as it used to be. Some fans even say they've felt secondhand embarrassment when watching the newer episodes.
While covering important topics is vital in today's world, it's also good for showrunners to keep in mind that people often use TV shows as a source of lighthearted entertainment after a long day. Perhaps a healthy balance of both wouldn't do any harm!
