Charming Juliette Lewis and charismatic Woody Harrelson became the Bonnie and Clyde of the 90's thanks to the movie Natural Born Killers, whose adventures brought the issue of the representation of violence in society to the forefront.

The future cult director Quentin Tarantino dreamed of making his debut on the big screen with Natural Born Killers, but he simply did not have enough money for his own production, and the script of the film was sold.

Tarantino Hates Natural Born Killers

The project fell into the hands of Oliver Stone, and the director completely rewrote it, enlisting the help of David Veloz and Richard Rutowski. The new version focused more on the media and journalists, and the glorification of violence and the pursuit of ratings became the main focus of the story.

Since the original script had undergone major changes, Tarantino requested that his name be removed from the list of screenwriters and that the film be credited only as being based on his story.

Quentin subsequently stated repeatedly that he did not like the resulting movie, and to demonstrate what Natural Born Killers could have been, Tarantino published his original script in a book.

What Is Natural Born Killers About?

Mickey Knox and Mallory Wilson fall in love, much to the misfortune of dozens of ordinary people. After killing Mallory's parents, the two embark on a deadly journey across America, killing anyone who gets in their way.

Natural Born Killers becomes nationally known after a series of reports by unscrupulous TV journalist Wayne Gale, and when Mickey and Mallory are finally brought to justice, it becomes a national sensation. But when Gale decides to interview the deadly couple, Mickey and his lover give him and the public an unexpected surprise.

Natural Born Killers Was a Breakthrough for Woody Harrelson

Though the film depicts various forms of cruelty with particular relish, it is first and foremost a satire on the elevation of serial criminals to the status of celebrities. Its dubious reputation and status as one of the most controversial films in history did not prevent it from becoming a classic of the crime genre and a breakthrough for Woody Harrelson.

In Natural Born Killers, Woody Harrelson showed the dark side of his charm for the first time. The "bad boy" appearance and habits allowed Harrelson to create a new incarnation of Clyde, pure evil in the flesh, with hellish energy and ferocity coming from a mile away.

Remarkably, such an extraordinary image destroyed the artist's boyish charm. At that time, Harrelson had a long-standing image – Woody Boyd from the TV series Cheers. But Oliver Stone's bloody thriller replaced the actor's naive charm with bestial power and wild charisma: you can't take your eyes off the screen, even though absolutely disgusting things are happening there.
