In fact, it might even be good for the show's storytelling.

Yes, it seems that Sheldon Cooper indeed is a pathological liar, and The Big Bang Theory prequel, Young Sheldon, appears to prove it. The prequel follows Sheldon's childhood in Texas and aims to let the viewer know the character even better, potentially finding explanation for some of Sheldon's bizarre quirks.

One such quirk — him being pathologically prone to lying — appears to get a proof in Young Sheldon when George manipulates the genius to tutor Billy and ends up having Sheldon agreeing to do that. The lesson goes surprisingly well in season 6 episode 4 of Young Sheldon, but there is a twist.

How on Earth did Sheldon, with his eidetic memory, forget about being so good with Billy in The Big Bang Theory? Because there is only one explanation for Sheldon labeling Billy his bully in the original show — the genius being a pathological liar.

But it's not as frustrating for the show and the character as you might think.

Sheldon's tendency to lie might be a good way for Young Sheldon to explain its many plot holes, because if we keep in mind that TBBT Sheldon could be lying pretty much about anything, then Young Sheldon may feel free to twist storylines in whatever ways seem more suitable.

For instance, it would be perfectly fine for the show to have George the way he is. In TBBT, Sheldon told Penny that he discovered that his dad having intimate relations with another woman when the genius was 14 years old. In Young Sheldon, George is totally different — and this might be explained by the fact that Sheldon simply lied to Penny about his dad.

After all, Sheldon has never been the best person in the world. People who want to be his friends have to learn to deal with his quirks, and being a pathological liar might just be one of them. In fact, it would fall in line with his overall personality — a sarcastic and sometimes rude genius that thinks that he is better than others, but never (hopefully) intends to actually hurt anyone.

Young Sheldon airs on CBS on Thursdays. Currently, the show is in season 6.
