Severance Character You Can't Stand May Just Win Your Heart in Season 2
Is she really a villain or just a mole?
On January 17, the second season of Severance, the sci-fi series from Ben Stiller and Dan Erickson, finally debuted on Apple TV+. Taking the concept of work-life balance to the point of absurdity, Severance offers a radical solution to what is essentially a rhetorical problem.
The process of splitting the personality does not spare the outie from thoughts of work or advice from loved ones about their controversial choice. And within the walls of Lumon, the innies don't think about their tasks, but about what is happening outside. Apocalypse, war, environmental crisis? Do they have children, families, lovers?
The show raises many questions, but one of the most important and intriguing is: whose side is (the presumed villain) Harmony Cobel really on?
Harmony Cobel Is the Most Ambiguous Character in Severance
Mrs. Selvig, aka Harmony Cobel, is the most controversial character in the story. Inside Lumon she is very strict and picky with the employees, but outside she calmly agrees with Mark's idea to leave the company and end the severance.
Harmony was left without a job when the board removed her from management after the incident, but in the finale she is the first to understand how Mark managed to get out of the office – it is Selvig who announces the overtime protocol. Adding intrigue to her story is the fact that both of Cobel's identities are now known to Mark's sister, Devon.
Harmony Cobel Is Not Loyal to Lumon, According to Fans
Reddit user Adequate_Ape suggested that Cobel is far from who she claims to be and who the creators want us to think she is. And if you pay more attention to the woman's actions, you can see that her behavior is not entirely consistent.
You might think that Cobel is devoted to Lumon, but in fact the woman is almost obsessed not with the corporation, but with its creator, who has become almost a deity to the workers – Kier. And that undermines her motivation.
In the second half of the first season, Cobel becomes interested in the reintegration process and continues to learn more about it, even when the management directly says that it is impossible.
She also tries to cause a memory lapse in Mark and fails to tell management about Helly's suicide attempt. In a series as well-written as Severance, nothing happens for no reason; Harmony is clearly pursuing her own interests, hidden from us so far.
“Each of those makes some sense if Cobel is working with Reghabi on reintegration. And it also makes sense of why she is trying to [stop] Helly R at the gala -- Cobel and Reghabi have a plan, and Helly R is f**king it up,” the Reddit theory says.
Harmony Cobel May Be Reghabi's Accomplice
It's possible that Cobel is working with Reghabi, and that's why she tried to stop Helly before her speech at the gala – Helly's innie wasn't supposed to escape, and that foiled Cobel and Reghabi's plan.
Moreover, fans speculate that Harmony sent Graner to Reghabi not to eliminate her, but to take his card and give it to Mark. This confirms how easily Reghabi dealt with Graner – as if she knew he was coming.
This remains a fan theory unless the remaining bulk of Severance season 2 proves it true. New episodes arrive on Apple TV+ every Friday.
