Apple TV’s hit show isn’t just some Hollywood writer’s dark fantasy.

Silo has been captivating Apple TV ’s subscribers for almost two years now, and while the series’ second season has just approached its end, it’s time to dive deeper into the whole story and to probably get some spoilers for what’s coming next.

Though it seems like an obvious thing for many Silo fans, some of them might still not be aware that the show is based on Hugh Howey’s trilogy of books. Here’s how you should read them in chronological order and how their plot falls into the TV version.

Warning: spoilers for the Silo books ahead!

First in the trilogy comes Wool, which is basically a start of it all when Julliette, portrayed in the TV show by Rebecca Ferguson, suddenly becomes the head of law enforcement and embarks on her own mission to delve into all the truth about the silo and to give the people in there a better life.

The next instalment in the trilogy is Shift, though there’s no continuation of the main story since the book comes as a prequel. The plot is focused on a group of people tasked with building 50 underground silos, which, for better or for worse, they manage to complete on time. The moment the project is finished, the outer world is demolished by nuclear weapons, thus leaving the characters no other choice but to stay underground forever.

Finally, the third novel called Dust is dedicated to the attempts of those who were left in silos to leave them and try to build a new life on the surface. The final chapter gives closure to a story that started from the apocalypse as the characters are trying to build a new world step by step.

Though some may think that each of the show’s two seasons are based on two books of the trilogy, this isn’t exactly true. To date, Apple TV’s Silo has expanded its story only to the events described by Howey in the first book.

Considering that the series has been officially renewed for seasons 3 and 4, there’s a reason to believe that those two will in fact correspond to two remaining books of the trilogy. The upcoming third season’s premiere date is yet to be announced, but the chances are we’ll see new episodes only by 2026.
