The Thing director John Carpenter said the 1982 cult horror movie may have a sequel.

According to Creepy Catalog, John Carpenter shared details about the future of The Thing horror franchise at the Texas Frightmare Weekend.

At the event, the director was asked if the mechanic Childs was transformed into The Thing in the finale of the original movie. Carpenter did not spoil the fate of the character, but instead said that the sequel is possible:

"I have been sworn to secrecy, okay, because there may be, I don't know if there will be, there may be a Thing 2."

The Thing takes place in 1982 in Antarctica. A group of researchers encounter an alien creature that can take on the appearance of its victims.

In the finale only MacReady and Childs survived the battle with the monster.

However, they decided to stay in the area of the destroyed research station, risking freezing to death.

New The Thing was released in 2011, but it turned out to be a prequel that did not show what happened to the original characters.

Carpenter's decision to hide the truth about Childs suggests that a possible sequel will reveal the fate of both Childs and MacReady.

John Carpenter admitted back in February 2022 that he wants to make a sequel. As the director hinted at the time, there are still many secrets in the world of The Thing.

The movie's open ending has haunted more than one generation of viewers – many fans tries to figure it out.

There are a number of unofficial and semi-official sequels to The Thing – comic books, video games, and short stories – each offering its own interpretation.

In 2004, Carpenter revealed that he had come up with a plot for a sequel to The Thing. It was to begin with the rescue of Childs and MacReady and the director wanted to explain the aging of the actors by frostbite.

But the studios were not interested in the idea.

As a result, instead of a sequel, fans got a prequel. If it had been successful, there would have been a probability of franchise's continuation.

But 2011's The Thing flopped at the box office burying franchise plans that seem to be picking up steam again.
