James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Tweak Creates a Thor Plot Hole in MCU
You thought Marvel's timeline was confusing? With new details arriving every year, it's quickly becoming inconsistent.
Director James Gunn has explained the time jump between Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Love and Thunder, but his explanation has only made things even worse.
According to Gunn himself, Guardians of the Galaxy "weren't with Thor for more than a few weeks." However, fans were quick to note that Gunn's comments do not quite fall in line with what is already established in the MCU.
"This doesn't make sense since 'Thor: Love and Thunder' is set months after Endgame. Gunn may have preferred the Guardians to spend as little time as possible with Thor, but L&T wasn't his movie. Whether he likes it or not Thor was [with] them for months," Twitter user moviepollz pointed out.
Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi, for his part, estimated that four years passed between the events of Endgame and Thor 4. As Gunn and Waititi's opinions clash, there is one little thing that plays in Waititi's favor.
"I know he's Thor but he really got that fit again in a few weeks?" Twitter user ttime3519 wondered.
In Endgame, we see Thor in his "dad bod", overweight and heavily into drinking beer. However, Love and Thunder has him back in his "god bod", even allowing fans a sneak peek into his training routine. But even God of Thunder is unlikely to train so hard that he could lose so much weight in such a short amount of time.
Continuity issues are not new for Marvel, and they only tend to get worse after Phase Four and the studio's increasing amount of various projects set in different places of the MCU timeline. For instance, She-Hulk: Attorney at Law referenced Jane Foster's Mighty Thor in its finale, even though it was claimed that the show is set before the events of Love and Thunder.
Currently, it needs to be clarified who is right and who is wrong. So if Marvel has a designated person to look after its own cinematic universe's timeline, then it might be time for them to step in.
