From Princess Shireen To Oberyn: Who Has Suffered The Most Terrible Fate In Game Of Thrones?
These characters were destined to meet a terrible end.
In George R. R. Martin's violent world, many heroes and villains have met a cruel fate. And while some characters were killed by dragons and the living dead, most of them perished at the hands of other men.
3. Oberyn Martell
The Prince of Dorne, also known as the Red Viper, was only introduced in Season 4 of Games of Thrones, but the character has had a huge impact on the story.
During his journey to King's Landing, Oberyn has been trying to take revenge on Gregor Clegane (aka The Mountain) for the brutal rape and murder of his sister. And he gets this chance when he goes to court to defend the honor of Tyrion Lannister, who's been accused of poisoning Joffrey.
The Little Lion wants to settle Tyrion's fate with a duel, and Oberyn agrees to defend the Lannister when he learns that his opponent will be The Mountain.
During the fight, the Red Viper wounds Clegane and taunts him to find out the truth about his sister's death, but makes a mistake and dies. Gregor gouges out Oberyn's eyes while telling him what he did to his sister and her children.
2. Princess Shireen
Stannis Baratheon's daughter was a young and docile girl who suffered from a terrible disease that left part of her face disfigured. Despite her condition, Shireen always tried to be kind and helpful to others.
However, the Princess fell victim to her father's inordinate desire to win the Iron Throne. As Priestess Melisandre advised him, Baratheon burned his daughter alive for the glory of the Lord of Light, so he could win the battle.
The sacrifice did not bring Stannis the victory he sought, and it was also the last terrible thing he did before his death.
1. Catelyn Stark
According to fans, it was Ned Stark's wife who suffered the most at the hands of George R. R. Martin and the series' scriptwriters.
Catelyn made a lot of mistakes throughout the story, which at some point made her the most hated character in the show. But the ultimate tragic twist in her fate was the Red Wedding, where her brother was to be betrothed to one of Lord Frey's granddaughters while Catelyn's son, Robb, broke his vows to the Lord of the Crossing and married for love.
Robb thought that Lord Frey had forgotten about it, but the old man joined forces with the Lannisters and destroyed nearly all of House Stark.
The deaths of her brother, her first son, and his pregnant wife make Catelyn's story the most devastating. And though Lady Stark survived the Red Wedding in the book, she did not have the same privilege in the show.
