Netflix's hit historical fiction-romance series will soon be dropping its third season but fans aren't sure about the main characters the showrunners have decided to focus on in the upcoming installment.

Julia Quinn's series of alternate universe romantic novels about young aristocrats in a fictional Regency era proved to be the perfect source material for a Shonda Rhimes-produced series. Since its release in 2020, Bridgerton has become one of Netflix 's biggest hits, breaking several streaming records and amassing an insanely loyal fan following. The result is that now millions of people around the world are looking forward to the release of the third season.

As has been revealed, the new season will be focusing on Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton's relationship, and many are eager to see that.

Penelope, also known as Lady Whistledown, the author of a popular gossip newsletter and a serial heart breaker, was a fan favourite during the first two seasons so many people are going to be happy to watch a whole series about her.

There is just one problem, though, many don't believe Penelope and Colin have been developed enough as characters to warrant a whole season focusing on them specifically.

Fans have been hotly debating the issue on Reddit for quite some time now with the majority consensus being that Penelope needs to be given some character development of her own before getting into a relationship with Colin.

In Season 2, Penelope relied heavily on Eloise to help her build out her Lady Whistledown persona and many fans were deeply frustrated by that turn of events, wishing Penelope had grown on her own rather than relying on "a little help from her friends" all the time.

When Netflix revealed the main story line for the third season, many fans were concerned by the fact that the writers were now clearly moving away from the source material in terms of continuity.

Season three was originally supposed to focus on Benedict and Sophie as is the case in Quinn's novels, but Netflix decided to go directly to book four in a bid to quickly cash in on Penelope's popularity.

The bottom line is many fans of the books and the series do not think Penelope and Colin are ready as characters to take on the lead role in the new season, seeing how in the original books they are given a lot more time to grow and evolve, but the showrunners seem determined to do just that.
