Better Call Saul Icon to Star in Remake of "Worst Movie in History"
It looks like we're about to hear the iconic line "I did not hit her. I did not. Oh hi, Mark!" once again. Narrated by Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk himself.
Written and directed by "disaster artist" Tommy Wiseau, the now classic movie, The Room, was released in 2003.
Despite the status of "one of the worst films ever made", the notorious independent drama about a love triangle with a tragic ending and mediocre acting has spawned a cult following of people who watch it regularly and know every line by heart.
Here they are, the realities of postmodernism, where layers of irony intertwine with genuine interest in a poorly-made movie!
Chances are we'll never know if Wiseau is really such a talentless filmmaker with a huge ego, or if it's a genius stage persona that's lasted more than 20 years.
On March 8, Canadian filmmaker, podcaster, and author Justin Decloux announced that the role of Johnny (Wiseau's character in the original) will be played by none other than Bob Odenkirk.
Comedy writer and performer Cameron Kasky confirmed the news, posting a photo on March 9 with Odenkirk, as well as Bella Heathcote as Lisa and Brando Crawford as Mark.
Given the green-screen background, the movie will have not only the same spirit, but also the CG technologies of 2003. This deserves praise for its dedication to the original!
The news was also confirmed by the actor who played the role of Saul Goodman himself. As Odenkirk shared on his Twitter:
"This is real. This is true. And let me tell you, I tried my best to SELL every line, as honestly as I could...and I had a BLAST."
As it turns out, according to Kasky, the remake is being made not only to please fans of The Room and Odenkirk, but also as a charity project.
The movie proceeds will benefit amfAR (the Foundation for AIDS Research), a nonprofit organization that funds HIV/AIDS research, treatment and education.
Undoubtedly, Odenkirk will make a great Johnny! Although it is unlikely that anyone will be able to match the genius of Tommy P. Wiseau. Meanwhile, the release date for the upcoming remake of The Room remains unknown.
