Beautiful CACW Callback in Wakanda Forever You Definitely Missed
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has many beautiful homage moments to both Chadwick Boseman and his character King T'Challa aka Black Panther.
Some are more obvious than others, but there's one callback to Captain America: Civil War that the majority of viewers missed. Let's check if you caught that.
The scene comes towards the end of the movie and directly connects Letitia Wright's Shuri with her late brother.
If you haven't yet watched Wakanda Forever, beware of the spoilers ahead!
The scene in question comes in a fight between Shuri and Namor, the leader of Talokan. When Shuri gains the upper hand, she faces a choice to take revenge for her mother's death and incur the wrath of the citizens of Talokan or spare Namor's life and end the cycle of violence.
Choosing the latter, Shuri says: "Vengeance has consumed us. We cannot let it consume our people."
Shuri offers Namor a peaceful alliance, which he accepts in the hopes to conquer the surface world one day. These words Shuri says about vengeance are a direct reference to a very similar scene in Captain America: Civil War and the speech given by Shuri's big brother T'Challa addressed to Zemo.
The arc of Shuri in Wakanda Forever basically repeats that of T'Challa in Civil War. Both seek revenge on the characters they blame for the death of a parent. While in Wakanda Forever Ramonda drowns during Namor's attack against the capital of Wakanda, in Civil War, T'Chaka is killed during a terrorist attack planned by Zemo.
Throughout the movie, T'Challa is trying to find Zemo and get back at him for killing his father. But when he finally faces Zemo and finds out that the antagonist has his own grounds for revenge – his whole family died in Sokovia destroyed by the Avengers – T'Challa changes his mind.
Realizing that T'Chaka's killing was never Zemo's plan but rather a collateral death just like that of Zima's family in Sokovia, Black Panther decides to break this vicious cycle and spare Zimo's life.
He says: "Vengeance has consumed you. It's consuming them. I'm done letting it consume me." Sounds familiar, right?
Shuri's decision to spare the life of her enemy and her speech about vengeance channel the wise words of her big brother in Civil War, thus paying a heartwarming tribute to his character and making sure that his legacy lives on in the MCU.
