6 Highest-Rated Western Series on Netflix in December 2023
Howdy pardner! Check out these Westerns streaming on Netflix this month.
America's Wild West period lasted for just 30 years. Despite that, it's a time that fascinates people and has inspired hundreds of movies and TV shows.
Here are the 6 highest-rated Westerns currently available to view on Netflix ranked by their Rotten Tomatoes score:
6. Django (2023)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 40%
1 Season, 10 episodes
This is a modern British adaptation of the 1960s Italian film of the same name, and has nothing to do with Django: Unchained.
Django, a fictional character from spaghetti westerns, ends up in a town called New Babylon in search of his daughter. New Babylon is a magnet for all sorts of outcasts, and he does find his daughter. But she's about to marry the town's founder, John Ellis, and doesn't want Django around, as trouble seems to follow him wherever he goes.
This series was not well received by the critics and has not yet been renewed.
5. The Ranch (2016)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 71%
4 Seasons (8 parts), 80 episodes
It's not often you get to see a western comedy, but that's exactly what this show is. Ashton Kutcher stars as Colt, a high school star quarterback who failed to pursue a career in football. Now he's back home after 15 years, helping out on the family ranch while waiting for a tryout with a semi-pro team.
The film was released to mixed reviews, but won the Outstanding Cinematography for Multi-Camera Series award for three years on the trot, from 2017 to 2019.
4. Frontier (2016)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 75%
3 Seasons, 18 episodes
A Canadian period drama starring Jason Momoa as Irish-Cree outlaw Declan Harp. The series follows Harp's attempts to break into the corrupt Hudson Bay fur trade, which is monopolised by crooked business and dodgy deals.
It's cutthroat, action-packed and features a great performance from Momoa, but some critics say that's its only redeeming feature.
3. Godless (2017)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 83%
1 Season, 7 episodes
Set in 1884, Godless tells the story of a young outlaw named Jack O'Connell, who is on the run from his mentor, Frank Griffin. O'Connell ends up in a small New Mexico town populated almost entirely by women.
When the women hear that Griffin has found out that O'Connell is in town and is on his way with his gang, they're determined to protect their visitor.
The show won three Emmys in 2018 and has been praised for its storytelling.
2. Longmire (2012)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88%
1 Season, 9 episodes
A neo-western, this show follows Sheriff Walt Longmire of the fictional Absaroka County in Wyoming. Recently widowed, Longmire puts on a brave face, even though he's hurting inside.
A charismatic man, Lomgmire is a throwback to traditional western heroes, determined to put his life back together and make sure he's fully committed to his job. With the support of his friends and family, he also seeks re-election as sheriff.
The show received mixed reviews on release, but regularly drew 4 million viewers on A&E before moving to Netflix.
1. Song of the Bandits (2023)
Rotten Tomatoes Score: 100%
1 Season, 9 episodes
Technically, this isn't a western, as it's set in South Korea. But it's a Western in all respects except location, and it certainly fits the genre. The action takes place during the Japanese occupation in the 1920s. The South Korean police and army have been disbanded and many Joseon people (today's Koreans) flee to Gando in China.
While some in Gando are simply there to rebuild their lives, others are intent on forming their own guerrilla armies and fighting to liberate Joseon.
The series received critical acclaim for its storytelling, action and acting, and a second season has already been commissioned.
