Running for ten impressive seasons, Smallville was particularly popular with teenagers because of the relatability of the characters and their struggles.

Of course, on top of the usual teen drama, Clark Kent had the added problem of dealing with emerging superpowers, which made his life immensely complicated.

But superpowers aside, Smallville was not your typical coming-of-age drama series. It was violent. It was brutal. It featured some of the most horrific deaths ever seen on TV. Here are the top five that prove this point:

  1. Lance Meets a Bone Saw

Back in season five, we met Lance, a medical student with a dark hobby of creating illicit drugs. Allowing users to have near-death experiences and even be able to communicate with the dead, things soon got way out of hand.

Lana Lang fell prey to him but when she took a stand and wanted to stop using the drug, he did not take it well. A struggle ensued and Lace ended up falling on a bone saw, ending his life in a graphic and nasty way.

  1. Alicia is Drugged and then Hanged

Alicia Baker was a sweet if slightly obsessive girl from season three. A love interest of Clark Kent, with the ability to teleport, she was murdered by a fellow student, Tim Westcott when she caught him trying to frame her for murder.

He drugged her and hanged her from a beam in her barn, her body being discovered by Clark, sadly too late to save her.

  1. Max Taylor Gets a Pencil Jammed into his Brain

The editor of the Daily Planet suffered a gruesome fate in season three at the hands of his own assistant, who was hypnotised into murdering him.

Under the influence of an email from Molly Griggs, she picked up a pencil and shoved it into his ear, killing him instantly.

  1. Alden is Impaled

Alden may have been a close friend of Oliver Queen, but he did little to endear himself to the audience during his brief time on the show.

He appeared in only one episode in season six (excluding flashbacks) in which he was viciously impaled by the Excelsior Academy Sword when it fell from a statue during a school reunion.

Believed an accident, in truth, it was the doing of someone named Duncan Allenmeyer, whom he had bullied relentlessly in his youth.

  1. A Cop's Spine is Ripped Out

Season six also held the most vicious, brutal, and downright disgusting deaths in all of Smallville. Remember Aldar? The massive alien that had a taste for bone marrow?

He killed many people, tearing out their bones and sucking on them for that nutrition he craved. The most graphic of these was a police officer who had his entire spine ripped out.

Not only was it gross, but it was also extremely violent and killed any lingering illusions that Smallville was an average teen drama.
