True feelings always win against the rank.

If there's one lesson to be learned from the inordinate number of books, TV shows, and movies about forbidden love between two people from very different social classes, it's that people shouldn't care. But the social boundaries are still there, so the need to break them down with art is still there.

Here are 5 takes on romance that knows no status or bank statements by Korean writers and directors.

Encounter (2018-2019)

The daughter of a politician, who seems to have everything, falls in love with a penniless man on a trip to Cuba. At first glance, they have no future back in Korea, but what if they're wrong? Everything from the writing to the cinematography to the undeniable chemistry between the two leads is top-notch, so Encounter should be a must-see for everyone.

Mr. Sunshine (2018)

Mr. Sunshine is a complicated story with many layers. The dynamic between Eugene Choi, who was born into slavery but managed to escape and make a name for himself, and young Go Ae-shin, an orphaned noblewoman who has never known any other life, is just one of them, but a very important one.

Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha (2021)

Lighthearted and sweet, this drama will remind you of what's important in life. Although Yoon Hye-jin is wealthy and successful, she struggles so much with her life that she decides to leave the big city and move to the coast. There she meets Hong Du-sik, a simple handyman who shows her the true meaning of happiness.

High Society (2015)

There's a rich woman who's willing to give up everything in her life to find true love and escape an arranged marriage, and there's a man who was born into poverty and dreamed of marrying into wealth to fix it. When their paths cross, everything becomes ten times more complicated but very entertaining for viewers.

It’s Okay To Not Be Okay (2020)

This drama is not for everyone. It's slow-paced and goes deep into the exploration of the darkest and most twisted nuances of mental health. However, if you don't shy away from such topics, you will definitely enjoy the powerful and famous figure of female lead Ko Moon-young.
