5 Community Jokes That Made You Think, ‘Should I Have Laughed at That?’
Did Community go too far with these jokes?
If you're a fan of Community, you know that the show had its fair share of edgy, borderline-offensive humor. It's what gave it its unique flavor and made it stand out from the crowd of sitcoms.
Here are five Community jokes that were just too much.
1. Dean Pelton: “If you get this wrong one more time I'm segregating the school.” (Season 3, Episode 8)
Dean Pelton has always been a character who is... well, let's say, unconventional. Troy and Britta are forced to keep hugging each other on camera. And Pelton isn’t happy with the result.
When he said “I'm segregating the school,” it was a "hold-up-what-did-he-just-say" moment. Of course, in the Dean's quirky way, he didn't mean any harm. But talk about a loaded comment.
2. Infamous 9/11 Comments (Season 1, Episode 5)
This one is just plain dark. Jeff makes a joke about 9/11 by saying “The world isn’t the only thing that changed on September 11…” And by the way, that is not the first or last time he does it.
3. Landlord or…? (Season 2, Episode 13)
Pierce, always the one to put his foot in it, causes a commotion when he exclaims, "There’s a rapist in the hallway!"
Annie calmly responds, "That’s my landlord. And if he wanted to rape you, you’d be raped."
4. Annie: “I'd say the whole word next time.” (Season 1, Episode 12)
Shirley, always the innocent and sometimes naive mother figure of the group, has her moments of the foot-in-mouth syndrome.
When she said to Annie, "I never knew you were a Jew," Annie's response was priceless. It was a gentle nudge towards being sensitive, but in the classic, light-hearted Community style.
5. Police Officer: “Anyway, walk to your cars in pairs tonight. Rape's up 8%.” (Season 3, Episode 19)
When a police officer casually mentions rape with a smile on his face in season 3 episode 19, you can’t help but laugh and think of how Community can weave between light and dark, sometimes jarringly so.
