He’s not even good for the bare minimum.

One thing that began to bother Young Sheldon viewers who tuned into the show after years of watching The Big Bang Theory and getting deep into the lore of all the characters, including Sheldon himself, was the apparent change in the character of George Cooper. The father of the family turned out to be nothing like his original description.

Many believe that this is why there is a common misconception that George is a superior parent to his wife Mary, who is definitely the extension of the character that originated on The Big Bang Theory. From the beginning, George didn't seem as neglectful, unfaithful, and addicted to drugs as he was initially described, and that was enough to make him a good guy.

A wonderful performance by Lance Barber was just the cherry on top of a character that was already very hard to hate. Young Sheldon viewers were immediately charmed by him and declared George a fan favorite almost immediately.

However, if you look at the show without the rose-colored glasses, you may find that George Cooper is still not the hero the fandom so desperately wants him to be. If anything, George is very much the image of a Midwestern dad from the 90s: not too happy with his family life, not too involved in his kids' education.

Do you think George Cooper is a good father?

Throughout the series, George is seen as not caring all that much about his children, unless he is particularly interested in what they say. He ends up having a slightly better relationship with Missy, but it took years of neglect to get there. He stops being involved with Georgie as soon as he gets his own ideas about his life.

While Mary is overly strict at times, and her parenting is as obviously flawed as George's, she's held to a much higher standard for her mistakes. Being a parent is a lot of work, but as long as you are a mother, you will always have to go the extra mile just to reach the level of a father who can just sip his beer and tell a few jokes every night.

If you want to see how the Coopers' family dynamic will change and evolve with Season 7 of the show, keep an eye out for the release date announcement! Until then, you can binge-watch the show on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.
