The eccentric character’s childish behavior does make sense now. Kind of.

Initially launched back in 2017 as The Big Bang Theory prequel, Young Sheldon came as a great opportunity to finally unveil all those mysteries about Sheldon Cooper’s quirky personality that have been torturing the original show fans for years.

Among the most popular demands viewers had for the prequel show to dwell on, Sheldon’s clothing style has probably always been the one to force everyone into creating never-ending theories while waiting for Young Sheldon to become specific about it.

As the show never quite made it completely clear, The Big Bang Theory fans quickly took to social media to share their thoughts, and some of them might have come close to the truth that has something to do with the character’s sorrowful past.

On Reddit, a few days ago a brand new heated discussion was started by those who, even after Young Sheldon’s definite finale, still wondered what exactly had become an incentive for the adult character to wear comic book-themed T-shirts literally all the time while young Sheldon’s clothing style has always been classy, which is also pretty weird for a young boy.

Some fans suggested that Sheldon probably had no other choice but to get dressed this way as a child, since all the clothes he was wearing were bought by his mom who most likely had chosen them as well.

Respectively, the adult Sheldon, being tired of all the formal shirts and pants he wore in his earlier years, started dressing the way he himself wanted to, as in The Big Bang Theory he’s already a grown man with his own money.

Such a suggestion indeed may be true considering Sheldon’s growing passion for comic books with time, but another fan theory provided a very different and disheartening angle that connected Sheldon’s style to his personal trauma in earlier years.

One comment in the Reddit thread put it, “What if he is stuck mentally at the age he started wearing the comic book t’s? He made the switch, normal for a pre-teen/teenager, shortly before going to college and his dad passing away. Two very pivotal and polarizing moments in his life, one exciting and adventurous and the other devastating and traumatizing. So maybe his subconscious was so overloaded that he literally froze at that age and his clothes are a reflection of the inner child that hasn’t grown.”

Another user also stated that “Sheldon had money now so he wanted to live the childhood he never had a chance too. He bought all that stuff because he couldn’t enjoy it when he was younger. Sci fi nerdom wasn’t big in the 80s as it is now.”

However discouraging this idea may seem when it comes to explaining Sheldon’s quirky behavior, his traumatic experience may in fact have had a huge impact on the way he was leading his life after moving out of the family house in Texas.

Still, given that a real reason for Sheldon’s style change passed throughout the show unbeknownst to its viewers, fans can sleep well at night knowing that the worst case scenario may not be true at all.
