Thankfully, the ending did the series justice.

If you were to ask any 90s teenager to name an iconic TV show, Dawson's Creek would definitely be one of the top answers. With 6 seasons full of love and drama, viewers became very attached to the characters and rooted for those they thought would be the best possible match.

Of course, as we all know by now, even the best shows can easily be ruined by a terrible ending. Fortunately, this was not the case with Dawson's Creek, as the majority of fans were satisfied with Joey and Pacey getting back together and spending some cozy moments in New York for the final scenes of the show.

What many people don't know is that this could have been very different. In fact, if it weren't for the cast protesting the original finale, fans would have been sorely disappointed to see Joey end up with Dawson instead.

As series creator Kevin Williamson told Entertainment Weekly, Joey and Dawson ending up together was his original intention. He even wrote the finale the way he saw fit: with Pacey out of the picture, no matter how romantic things got between him and Joey.

As it turned out, a lot of people on the set disagreed with that decision.

The main one was Katie Holmes, who portrayed Joey Potter throughout the series and was very sure of her "happily ever after" moment. Another, of course, was her co-star Joshua Jackson, who even had to have a conversation with Williamson himself.

“I was like ‘Hell no! No. No. No. That’s not gonna work for me'. I had a whole conversation with Kevin about this. Like, ‘Look, I get it. This is the idea that you had in your head, but I’m just gonna ask you to watch the tale of the tape, and this is the more interesting end for these characters,” he said.

Fortunately for both viewers and showrunners, they made the right choice and followed the actors' intuition on this one.

That way, the audience ended up with an image of the couple they were rooting for, and the showrunners avoided the backlash that would have probably haunted them for years.
