Bad Sisters Is Finally Back on Apple TV+: Was Season 2 Even Necessary?
Did we even need a second season?
The first season of Bad Sisters was based on the little-known Belgian series Clan. However, many viewers still saw the project as a comedy version of Big Little Lies: once again, female solidarity, toxic masculinity, and domestic violence.
Unfortunately, the list of parallels was extended by another item – a second season: both projects were conceived as miniseries, but how can you resist the love of the audience?
What Is Bad Sisters Season 2 About?
Two years have passed since the death of John Paul, an abuser and domestic tyrant who tormented the entire Garvey family.
The widowed Grace decided not to raise her daughter alone and found a new man, the sensitive and insightful Ian. The couple is so happy that they decide not to put it off and marry immediately.
It would seem that this is it, a well-deserved happy ending for Grace, but problems begin to pile up. First, a suitcase appears with John Paul's father hidden in it, then the police return to the death of the man himself.
A frightened Grace tells her husband a terrible secret about the murder of her ex – Ian can't take it anymore and runs away.
Bad Sisters Managed to Create a Worthy Intrigue in Season 2
Bad Sisters follows in the footsteps of not only Big Little Lies but also Broadchurch – two crime shows that tried to create a new intrigue after an already successful first season.
It's not easy: after all, the story has been told, the main and subplots have reached their logical conclusions, and stepping into the same river twice is an outright mockery of the viewer.
And yet, the creators of Bad Sisters managed to avoid wasting time with the sisters' attempts to get away with the crime at all costs and come up with something really interesting.
In the second episode, one of the sisters dies in a car accident – a shockingly bold plot twist. Garvey will not only have to mourn his sister, but also find out the circumstances and background of the accident, and throw off the overly vigilant police.
The first few episodes manage to balance the variety of storylines and genres – for example, even after the turning point, Bad Sisters doesn't veer off into a drama about trying to survive grief, but continues with black humor.
Bad Sisters Lost Some of Its Charm With the Move to a Standard TV Format
And yet, by the end of the third or beginning of the fourth episode, it becomes clear that something is wrong with the return – two years ago, viewers clearly loved a different show.
The thing is, the new episodes are built on typical TV logic: each scene advances the plot, and each line tells the characters exactly as much as they need to know.
And yet, after the somewhat illogical but incredibly touching finale, almost all of the negatives disappear. Bad Sisters should have ended with a great first season, but the new episodes allowed us a brief glimpse into the lives of the four, but still equally charismatic and funny sisters.
