Seemingly, Joe Goldberg’s bloody odyssey will bring him to the point where he started.

Summary:

  • Netflix announced that the final season of You, a hit psychological thriller, will feature the new character, who is, presumably, a reference to Season 1.
  • The Season 5 events may resemble the initial setting of the series to show how much more obsessive Joe has become and how he can find a way out of it.

Joe Goldberg has turned to a common name related to stalkers and creepy simps since the first season of the You series premiered in 2018 on Netflix. It featured a bookstore manager Joe, portrayed by Penn Badgley, who falls in love with a girl, then develops a horrifying obsession over her and eventually becomes a serial killer.

The following three seasons added much to the main character’s development as a relentless murderer, though having some good intentions and memories remained in his soul.

Season 5, presumably the final You season, is much-awaited as it promises to bring the whole story of Joe Goldberg’s crimes full circle.

Such a theory started blossoming when Netflix announced Madeline Brewer as a new member of the show’s cast. Though there is a small piece of information regarding her character, some intriguing assumptions on her role in the final season can already be made.

The actress is going to portray the playwright Bronte working at Joe's new bookstore in New York, as he moved back to both his and series’ starting point in the end of Season 4. As noticed by fans, Brewer’s appearance and character’s description resemble much the ones of Guinevere Beck (played by Elizabeth Lail), Joe’s first love interest and victim.

There is no doubt it can’t be a mere coincidence that such a number of details and the whole story setting refer us to the first season of You. The announcement itself teases fans that the new female character and, most probably, Joe’s new love interest, will bring him "nostalgia for his former self", making him recall his previous relationship patterns and the very roots of his lust for blood and unhealthy love obsessions.

The words of the show’s main star, Penn Badgley, also added to the probability of Joe’s return to the good old obstacles in the final season. He mysteriously stated in the Season 5 promotion video that his character’s "loose ends" will finally catch up to him so that he stops running from who he is, finding a shelter in his frauds and murders.

This showrunners’ decision can possibly attract more viewers to the finale than to the fourth season of the show, which got divided reviews from both critics and viewers, as the beginning of Joe’s crimes was a huge success. Keep an eye out for more updates.
