A Movie About the Most Bizarre Artist

The British biographical drama The Color Room was directed by Claire McCarthy, best known for the 2018 film Ophelia, starring Daisy Ridley and Naomi Watts. The screenplay was written by screenwriter and novelist Claire Peate.

The story follows the colorful and unconventional life of Clarice Cliff. She was one of the first English women artists whose work began to rival that of male ceramic designers around the world. Like many others in the field, Cliff was a working-class woman, but her eccentricity was that she refused to be apprenticed to a single specialized technique: instead, she risked her wealth to learn as many techniques as possible from all kinds of artists and designers.

As a result, despite the prejudices of conservative-minded people, By the mid-20s, Cliff had developed a unique Art Deco style in her designs, playing not only with color but also with the shape of the pottery itself, and by the 30s, her products were on display in the most luxurious shops in London. The artist's work was described as 'bizarre', and together with the equally eccentric factory owner Colley Shorter (Matthew Goode), who later became her husband, Clarice Cliff managed to create one of the most successful pottery brands.

Even though The Color Room went virtually unnoticed, it has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics and audiences alike have noted that despite the very conventional cinematography and narrative for such an unconventional individual, the story of a 'little' woman who turned an entire industry upside down is incredibly inspiring and endearing.
