“He could have killed him”, wrote director Judd Apatow in an already deleted tweet after Will Smith walked onstage during the 2022 Oscars ceremony and slapped its presenter Chris Rock across the face for making a joke about his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith.

Before presenting the best documentary feature, Rock joked about Pinkett Smith’s baldness (she struggles with the autoimmune disorder alopecia, which can cause hair loss) and made a reference to the 1997 movie “G.I. Jane” in which Demi Moore appears with a shaved head.

Apatow thinks that Smith’s behavior is “pure narcissism” and he learned nothing from training for Ali.

“I’m glad Chris is ok. Will Smith ’s punches are as soft as his raps”, concluded the director.

Comedian Kathy Griffin shares Apatow’s point of view. She’s sure that it’s a very bad practice to walk up on stage and physically assault a comedian. “Now we all have to worry about who wants to be the next Will Smith”, Griffin wrote.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has also issued a statement, in which speaks against violence of any form.
