Will 'Bridgerton' Season 3 Introduce Its First Gay Couple?
Netflix's biggest period drama seems to be moving farther and farther away from the original Jula Quinn series of novels.
'Bridgerton ' became a world-wide phenomenon back 2020, launching Regé-Page Jean and Phoebe Dynevor into a mega stardom. The second season proved that the series' success was no fluke, once again racking up incredible ratings and receiving warm reviews from fans and critics alike. Throughout the previous installments, the series followed Quinn's novels fairly closely, tweaking them a bit to suit the fandom's wishes. But the next season promises something entirely new for the host of English aristocrats.
Fans Furious Over 'Bridgerton' Season 3 Diverting From Book Order
According to Variety, the third season of the series will follow the love affair between Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan), departing from the continuity of the original novels. The third novel was centered on a private life of Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson), but series' showrunner changed the order of books, choosing the 4th one instead. So fans are expecting something more exciting from the third installment – Benedict coming out as gay, for example, with 'Bridgerton' thus setting up its first queer story arc to concentrate on later in season 4.
Needless to say, fans on Twitter were surprised to hear this theory, given Benedict's undeniable interest in women and the fact that Julia Quinn said such a turn of events was 100% unlikely.
Another important fact that debunks this theory is that the Netflix series has always strictly followed the original when it comes to revealing love interests, and there was no indication in the Quinn novels that Benedict was gay.
