Why Sadie Sink Would Be Great Casting for Aloy: A Study in Red
The Stranger things star is “reportedly confirmed” to play Aloy in the upcoming Horizon TV show.
Summary:
- Netflix and Sony joined forces to adapt the Horizon games into a TV series.
- Rumor has it that Aloy will be played by Sadie Sink.
- Fans are divided, claiming that it would be either good or terrible.
If you’ve ever played Horizon games (Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West), you know why it’s gotten so popular over the last couple of years.
No wonder Netflix wants to adapt the show for live-action TV—big popularity means big money (most of the time), no matter the criticism surrounding adaptations like these—The Last of Us, for example, had it pretty rough, mostly due to miscast.
So how to avoid these mistakes in Horizon casting? Pick Sadie Sink, of course!
Sadie Sink has starred in multiple critically acclaimed shows and movies at this point, taking our breath away with her performance in The Whale, in some of Taylor Swift ’s music videos, and, of course, Stranger Things where she depicted Max, a troubled teenager.
She gave it her all in Episode 4, Season 4 of that show and rightfully earned adoration and lots of fans after her tearjerking acting choices. It doesn’t come as a surprise that many think of Sink when they hear about the Horizon adaptation.
Some fans, however, express concerns that it is grasping at straws and that there are way better choices that would fit Aloy’s personality perfectly, like the actress who actually brought Aloy to life in the games.
They have a point, of course: a lot of fans would be amazed to see Aloy played by, well, Aloy. But what would be the point of a live-action adaptation if it were the exact copy of the original game?
Besides, Hannah Hoekstra (Aloy in the games) is now thirty-five, and aren’t we tired of very adult actors playing teenagers? We had them on Gossip Girl, on Teen Wolf, you name it. It’s time for actual teenage representation! Hoekstra would be great at playing Aloy’s mother, Elizabeth—and we will definitely second that choice if they ever pick her.
Others claim that Sink’s “too small and young-looking.” Aloy herself was not a large looming figure, but she was larger than life in the games, drawing the attention of every single person around her. We believe Sink is the center of attention every time she is on screen.
Besides, Sadie Sink is young, but so was Aloy (about 18–19), and it would be fantastic to actually see such a young person go through everything that was thrown at her.
Regardless of the casting choice, would the live adaptation of Horizon be good or fail to meet the devoted fans’ expectations? Only time will tell. With Netflix joining forces with Sony, it’s always a gamble.
