June looks to be a bumper month for new shows.

Summary

  • House of the Dragon Season 2 will air on June 16th.
  • This is 2 months earlier than Season 1 hit our screens.
  • It faces stiff competition from the return of other top shows in the same month.

It's been more than 18 months since House of the Dragon Season 1 landed. But with the recent release of two trailers for the next installment of the Targaryen Civil War, anticipation for its return has ramped up.

But that's not the only big show landing in June. Fans can also look forward to:

Opinions are divided as to whether this is positive or negative

With four major shows hitting our screens in the same month, some fans are wondering if there will be a TV overload.

But is it really a bad thing? For many years, there have been several moments in the scheduling calendar that have seen a plethora of new TV choices. Christmas has always been a jam-packed time, with networks typically looking to introduce new series in early January.

Likewise, it's not uncommon for those series to end in the run-up to Easter, with a new tranche of attention-grabbing shows unleashed afterward. And fall is an annual feast for TV, too.

But summer has traditionally been a bit of a downtime for viewers.

The sense of reticence expressed by some about four big shows returning within the same month may simply be a reflection of that. But the TV landscape has changed and continues to change. So maybe we just need to get used to it.

The way we watch TV has evolved

It's important to remember that traditional TV schedules were based on fewer channels (with smaller budgets) and viewing options.

Summer was seen as a time when people went on vacation and didn't watch their favorite shows. Not anymore. The ability to take devices anywhere or to catch up means that people can fit their viewing around their schedules. It doesn't have to be the other way around.

Think about it. If you're a fan of House of the Dragon, you'll find a way to watch episode 1 no matter where you are or what you're doing. If you can't watch it live, you'll put your fingers in your ears, avoid social media, and tune in as soon as possible.

The same goes for fans of The Boys and The Bear, as well as Star Wars enthusiasts eager to see what The Acolyte has in store.

Modern audiences also benefit from not having to choose one over the other. If you like all four shows, see all four shows.

What to expect from House of the Dragon Season 2

The trailers tell us that it's time to pick a side. After what was a bit of a slow burner in Season 1, the story promises to pick up the pace.

There are only 8 episodes of the new season, compared to the previous 10. This suggests that the story will be tighter and we'll get into the meatier action quicker. All indications are that the first season was very much about setting the scene and explaining the story behind the Dance of the Dragons.

Some may have found it a little tedious at times, but with a lot of information to cram in and many years to go through, it's hard to see what choice the producers had. Now the scene is set. We know the key characters, we understand where things stand, and we're ready to watch the reaction unfold in a much more Game of Thrones fashion, as the battle lines have been drawn very clearly.
