Sometimes things simply don’t work out.

Even though the Law & Order franchise has seen a lot of comings and goings over the years, there are some actors who have been harder to let go than others. And for some of them, the mystery behind their exits is still unknown.

In the case of renowned actress Dianne Wiest, who appeared in 46 episodes of the original Law & Order for 2 years, many fans are still wondering what prompted it. While some may believe there was some sort of behind-the-scenes drama that preceded her departure, the reality is far less exciting.

Why Did Nora Lewin Leave Law & Order?

Portrayed by Dianne Wiest, District Attorney Nora Lewin was never really a fan-favorite character, but she played an important role in the show's development for two years, from 2000 to 2002. After that, her character was written off when she decided not to run for re-election after her interim term.

The real reasons for the actress' departure remained a mystery.

Speaking to The Kansas City years after her departure from Law & Order, Dianne Wiest admitted that it was her own decision, in line with what the producers behind the show thought of her presence at the time. Simply put, Law & Order was never the problem, but Wiest didn't feel comfortable in the role:

“It was a great show but not the type of thing I’m any good at. I was really bad. I was just totally miserable and asked to leave, and they were happy to get rid of me,” the actress explained.

What Is Dianne Wiest Doing Now?

While the actress' position on Law & Order was filled by Fred Dalton Thompson's Arthur Branch in season 13, she continued to develop her acting career in other projects. Since the early 2000s, Wiest has made many appearances in film and television, including some leading roles in shows as dark as Law & Order.

Currently, for example, the actress is part of the cast of Mayor of Kingstown, as she portrays Mariam McLusky. On the other hand, from 2015 to 2019, Wiest appeared as Joan Short in the CBS sitcom Life in Pieces.

In 2024, the actress will appear in the Paramount Plus psychological thriller Apartment 7A. So, if you are interested in following her projects, be sure to tune in to Paramount Plus on September 27, 2024, to catch the premiere.
