If you’ve been loving the Game of Thrones prequel so far, you should know the creative heroes who made it possible.

In most cases, we only know so much about the people behind our favorite movies and TV shows. We know a few lead and supporting stars by name; we could probably spell the names of directors or showrunners without too many mistakes; and sometimes, the person who penned the script also gets a little recognition.

But every major production involves hundreds if not thousands of people, most of them going completely underappreciated. It doesn’t take a genius to thank George Martin for making House of the Dragon possible, for one — but do you know all the others who wrote their brains and fingers off to deliver the Targaryen spin-off?

Who Wrote House of the Dragon, in General?

Despite having already mentioned him, we can’t start the discussion of “who wrote HotD” without paying our respect to George Martin first. The celebrated author wrote the novel Fire & Blood, on which the entire series is based, and has also served as a scriptwriter, consultant, or co-creator on many actual episodes in both seasons.

Then, we have Ryan Condal. Primarily known as the House of the Dragon showrunner, Condal has worked on every single episode by far and personally penned six of them as a writer. Beyond the original novel, he has dedicated the most to HotD being the way it is today, but once again — he was far from the only one.

Who Wrote House of the Dragon, Specifically?

As it often happens with large-scale TV shows, House of the Dragon isn’t worked on by just one or two people. There’s an entire writer’s room involved, and so far, eight of its representatives have been credited as writers for various episodes.

While not shaping the series on the large scale like Martin or Condal, each of them added their own flavor and vision to the final product by creating standalone episodes.

Ti Mikkel serves as a story editor for House of the Dragon, being a Game of Thrones alum. So far, she has edited six episodes of HotD and personally wrote one. Sara Hess, David Hancock, and Eileen Shim wrote two episodes each, and Charmaine DeGrate, Gabe Fonseca, Kevin Lau, and Ira Parker wrote one episode each.

All House of the Dragon’s writers hail from other big-scale projects like Westworld, The Night Shift, The Sympathizer, The Crown, House, Orange Is the New Black, and many more. They are great professionals who largely remain out of the spotlight, so let’s give them some well-deserved props whenever possible, shall we?
