Who Would Win In LotR Extended Cut's Most Unusual Battle?
We could have seen the most epic battle of the trilogy if PJ had done it right.
Peter Jackson's trilogy had many awesome moments, but this scene remained in the extended cut of the movie. And fans were still left wondering who would win: Mithrandir or the former king of Numenor?
In Return of the King, some of the strongest characters in Tolkien's universe clashed in the battle for Gondor. Gandalf the White was confronted by the Witch-king of Angmar, who broke the wizard's staff and tossed him aside. While fans will never know how Tolkien would have written the end of this battle, there has been speculation about the possible winner.
Witch-king and co-principal Nazgul was once the most powerful king of Numenor, the mightiest kingdom of men. But with cunning and power, Sauron convinced him to side with evil and made him his slave.
Redditor BigJockK suggests that this makes the Witch-king equal to Aragorn, who, according to Gandalf, could get rid of Sauron if he took the Ring himself. But even without his master's protection, Nazgul is strong in his own right.
Gandalf is a Maiar, a spirit-half-god in the Tolkien’s legendarium, like Sauron. But could the Witch-king defeat someone as formidable as his master?
The White Wizard was able to overcome Durin's Bane, called Barlog in Peter Jackson's trilogy. In the book, however, Gandalf told Denethor, Boromir's father, that he could hardly compete with the Witch-king in battle.
But fans still prefer Mithrandir. It is unlikely that the wizard faced the Nazgul in open combat and won easily, though Tolkien's universe has seen no less bizarre events. For example, everyone's favorite hobbit and Frodo's gardener, Sam Gamgee, killed the giant spider-monster Shelob.
Some Redditors still believe that things are not so clear cut, as the Witch-king was not just a spirit, but a wraith imbued with demonic powers by Sauron. Nazgul was called the Black Captain who commanded Sauron's army. And Tolkien seems to have wanted this character to oppose Gandalf the White.
And while many fans did not enjoy the scene from the extended cut of the movie, they would have loved to see a full-scale battle between Mithrandir and the king of Angmar.
