Who is Florence Pugh's Dune 2 Character And Why Is She So Important?
The trailer for Dune: Part Two is here and we can't take our eyes off Florence Pugh.
Denis Villeneuve's upcoming film has already set a high bar, and the recently released trailer has raised it even higher.
After getting a closer look at the cast, fans became even more curious about Florence Pugh 's role in the upcoming film. Here's what we know so far.
In the second part of Dune Florence Pugh plays Princess Irulan, the daughter of Emperor Shaddam. It's her soothing voice that can be heard in the background of a trailer as she narrates the past and future of Paul Atreides.
Princess Irulan is the eldest of five daughters of Shaddam IV, the 81st Padishah Emperor, and Anirul, a member of the highly secretive Bene Gesserit.
She appears at the end of the first Herbert's Dune book and plays a major role in Paul's story ever since.
After Paul becomes Padishah Emperor in Dune Messiah, the second part of the novel, the following event brings his character together with Princess Irulan and they tie the knot.
However, the marriage seems to be unhappy as Paul and Chani still carry their love for each other.
Irulan eventually enters into a conspiracy against her husband, leading her House Atreides to irrevocable consequences.
But after much tension between the three of them, the Princess finally accepts her place in the House and writes an account of Paul's journey to Arrakis. The later books and the legacy of all characters will be based on this account.
Frank Herbert made Princess Irulan a major character in the second book, giving her a crucial role in the development of the story, so fans can expect quite a fair amount of screen time for Florence.
We may also see Villeneuve put aside the "dutiful wife" part of the Princess and show us a more complex and powerful side of her.
Knowing the previous characters that Florence Pugh has portrayed in her movie career, we can definitely count on her performance in Dune.
Though not all of Princess Irulan's actions were sympathetic, Dune fans still consider her a very intelligent and compelling character, so seeing her in the next movie sequels, based on Dune Messiah and Children of Dune, will undoubtedly be a reward.
