Many films fail at the domestic box office but are incredibly popular overseas.

There are many cases of American movies not doing well in their home country. Take Warcraft (2016), for instance — the movie wasn't appreciated much in the US but became a hit in China, where it was the top-grossing film. Another unfortunate case was Mars Attacks! (1996), which was surprisingly successful in Europe.

We've put together a list of three movies that have managed to redeem themselves in foreign markets after failing in the States.

1. Tango & Cash (1989)

One of the biggest US flops was Tango & Cash, starring Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell. The Hollywood stars played rival police detectives who were forced to team up to fight a notorious drug lord.

Despite the star-studded cast and breathtaking action, Tango & Cash was not well received by American audiences and critics. The film flopped at the box office and even got a Golden Raspberry nomination for Worst Screenplay.

However, the movie was much more warmly acclaimed abroad. Russia and Germany embraced the action flick, and it boosted Stallone and Russell's reputations in Europe.

2. The War of the Roses (1989)

Directed by Danny DeVito and starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, The War of the Roses is a black comedy that follows a married couple, Oliver and Barbara Rose, who decide to divorce.

Barbara is tired of sitting at home and wants to channel her energy into business. But her husband, a respectable civil servant, does not like his wife's intentions. So Barbara splits the house in two and confronts Oliver.

Despite the talented crew and the actors' excellent performances, the movie's reception in the US was rather sluggish. American audiences found the dark humor and depiction of a crumbling marriage too uncomfortable to fully appreciate the film.

In Germany, however, the comedy became incredibly popular and even spawned a term, Rosenkrieg, which stands for acrimonious divorce.

3. Baby's Day Out (1994)

The adventure comedy film was an absolute failure at the American box office, making back only a third of its budget.

The movie tells the story of a baby named Bink, who is abducted by a group of criminals who want his rich parents' money. However, Bink manages to escape and spends a whole day in downtown Chicago.

Although it was a complete flop in the US, Baby's Day Out enjoyed huge success in India. The innocent and ridiculous humor resonated well with local audiences, who were captivated by the adventures of the adorable little kid.
