When & Why Did the SEAL Team’s Clay Spenser Die?

Even though viewers are used to seeing their favorite characters leave the show, it's never easy to say goodbye. Especially when the character is brutally murdered on the spot instead of being written off for a happy reason.

SEAL Team viewers were devastated by the news of Clay Spenser's death, even though many saw it coming. Here's why the writers couldn't keep him on the show any longer, and why the horrific circumstances of his death couldn't really be changed to help the narrative.

How Did Clay Spenser Die on SEAL Team?

While many viewers have speculated about Spenser's death during the 5th season of the show as he ended up in a war zone ambush, these rumors were proven wrong when Max Thieriot announced his comeback for season 6. Little did the viewers know that it was season 6 that would actually bring the tragedy.

In the eighth episode of the season, Aces and Eights, Spenser is shot by a security guard while trying to talk Ben out of committing suicide. In a tragic moment, he manages to save Ben, but pays with his own life. In reality, the reason for the actor's departure had to do with the success of another of his shows, Fire Country.

As SEAL Team showrunner Spenser Hudnut told TVLine, it was important to him that Clay leave as the hero he is:

“Yes, it is shocking and it’s horrible and it’s an accident, but it was really important to me that Clay, in my mind, died a hero. He saves Ben from making a horrible decision, he saves Ben from taking his own life, and he comes full circle from the Swanny storyline in Season 2, but here he’s able to succeed,” he explained.

How to Watch SEAL Team Season 7?

Like almost every other CBS show, SEAL Team seasons 1 through 6 are available for streaming with a Paramount Plus subscription.

However, the show has also been renewed for its final season 7, which will premiere on August 11, 2024. So if you are interested in watching it, be sure to tune in to CBS.
