Of course, it could’ve been a one-episode special if he got straight to the point, but that was never the way of Ted Mosby. Getting straight to the point, we mean… Or not telling his children about every single woman he’d ever slept with.
It took one too many seasons before the enigmatic Mother, hyped up by literally years of being mentioned but never addressed, made her first on-screen appearance. Played by Cristin Milioti, she charmed everyone immediately — but despite the contrary belief, it wasn’t the last season that the Mother made her entrance.

After so long, some fans had lost all hope of actually meeting the Mother by the time Season 8 rolled around. While it wasn’t the season where Tracy McConnell was supposed to be properly introduced, but to fan the flames and have the audience await Season 9 in harrowing anticipation, we finally got a glimpse of her in the end.

Something New, the 24th and final episode of Season 8, ended with Cristin Milioti making her first appearance. The Mother was finally revealed to the audience as she bought a ticket to Farhampton at the Long Island Rail Station just after the gang left in that direction. To avoid any confusion, she was shown carrying her iconic yellow umbrella — and the ending scene sent fans absolutely howling.

The next year, How I Met Your Mother finally got to the point where Ted met his kids’ Mother. While overall, Season 9 is regarded as one of the weakest, that’s largely because it was incredibly short in terms of the in-world timeline — and the devastatingly stupid and painful finale of the entire show that concluded S9.

We could never bring ourselves to hate Season 9 solely thanks to Cristin Milioti. The actress embodied everything charming and special about Tracy aka The Mother and in no time, everyone was in love with her — from Ted to the gang to fans back home. While she didn’t have much screen time at all, Milioti stole the spotlight in Season 9 and was the sole reason for Alternative Ending’s popularity: people really wanted her character to be alive and happy.
