Whatever Happened to Chris Crocker, "Leave Britney Alone" Guy?

The 'Leave Britney Alone!' video went viral within two days of it being released back in 2007. The heartfelt video was a moment in time that shot Chris Crocker to instant fame after it developed from a message of support into a tirade against fans, the media and social media users who Crocker clearly wasn't happy with owing to the way the singer was being portrayed and the negative comments being plastered across the internet.

Crocker came in for criticism from some quarters with accusations of piggybacking on what was a trying time for Britney, suggesting that the motivation for posting the video was at odds with the message it purported to carry.

These days, Britney seems to be in a much better place and is active on Instagram. She recently released a book, The Woman in Me, in which she opens up about some of the hardships she has faced in her life. The cover of the book features Britney posing tastefully topless – a theme that runs through many of her Instagram posts, where she shows off revealing dresses, topless pictures and even a nude photo on the beach.

The answer to this question is that Chris Crocker is nowhere to be seen. But Cara is another who is active on Instagram and happy to share pictures of her life. That's because Chris transitioned and took on the given name Cara in 2021.

The 'Leave Britney Alone!' video is still available on YouTube, although Crocker's account was closed down in 2015. These days, she prefers to talk candidly on Instagram about the battles she faces. As you can probably imagine, some of her posts attract negative comments from a few keyboard warriors. But there are also plenty of posts from users who see Cara as an inspiration.

She certainly has plenty of fun in her Instagram videos and doesn't take herself too seriously.

Sadly, Cara's most recent posts have been about the loss of her grandmother, who raised her. As someone who shares so much of her life online, Cara has kept her 970,000 followers up to date with the progress of her grandmother's deteriorating health and has received an outpouring of support from her followers, which has no doubt brought her comfort in difficult circumstances.

Between that video and today, Cara has had a varied career. She's done comedy, drag and even appeared in adult films. But she's best known as a vlogger who speaks openly about her own experiences and wider issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community.

But if you think she was completely unknown before she posted her defence of Britney Spears, you'd be wrong. Of course, back in 2007, social media was still in its infancy and it was rare for anyone to go viral in the way that it might now. But Crocker was well known on the vlogging scene before video went mainstream and had a decent following on MySpace (remember that?).

What does the future hold?

Right now, the future looks bright for Cara and Britney. they both seem to have found their happy place. As people in the public eye, they both know that no matter what they post or how they live their lives, they'll be subject to criticism and negativity.

But they both seem to have reached a stage where they're comfortable in their own skin and have largely stopped worrying about what other people think of them.
