What If Bridgerton’s Colin Is Already Head Over Heels for Penelope in S2?

Bridgerton season 3 is set to focus on Colin and Penelope’s love story, skipping Benedict and Sophie’s tale for the time being. While some fans patiently wait for the upcoming season, guessing how much of the original novel’s plot will be preserved, others are cooking up the most insane theories about what’s to come.

According to Netflix ’s official synopsis for Bridgerton season 3, Colin and Penelope’s story won’t start a decade into the future, as it does in the books. Instead, it will pick up right where it left off in season 2 – Penelope is tired of waiting for Colin and is now determined to find herself a life partner, and Colin is ironically the guy who offers to assist her in that endeavor by teaching her confidence.

In the season 2 finale, Penelope overhears Colin speaking to his friends about how he “would never dream of courting Penelope Featherington.” The whole scene is played for laughs, and Pen ends up with her feelings hurt by Colin’s words.

What if Colin actually meant his line to be endearing? Taken out of context, Colin’s words are pretty harmless – or even loving. Sure, it’s wrong that Mr. Bridgerton is talking about his friend behind her back and allows his friends to make fun of her, but that’s societal pressure for you.

Colin could’ve in fact meant what he said: he could believe that Pen was too good for him, which is why he didn’t even let himself think about her in a more-than-a-friend way. After all, Colin hardly seems like the two-faced type of guy to gossip behind someone’s back. Essentially, he is just a lost boy who is trying to find his place in life.

Penelope has always been there for Colin, and he knows that and appreciates her for it. Could he be already in love with her but convinced that he doesn’t stand a chance with a girl like Pen? Colin has repeatedly told her how exceptional she is, so that’s not too far-fetched.

If Bridgerton season 3 tweaks the original novel and makes Colin pine after Penelope while simultaneously helping her find a husband, that might just turn out to be the most brilliant plot twist yet.
