What Did Frodo Actually Do For a Living Before Lord of the Rings?
The famed hobbit and hero Frodo Baggins of The Lord of the Rings seemed to have had a quiet and uneventful life before the main events of the books.
As a member of the Shire's Baggins family, one of the wealthiest and most respected hobbit families in Middle-earth, he was born into a life of comfort and security.
But have you ever wondered what Frodo actually did for 50 years before embarking on his epic quest to destroy the One Ring?
Before the events of the Lord of the Rings, Frodo lived a peaceful life as a hobbit of the Shire. He was adopted by his cousin Bilbo, after his parents, Drogo Baggins and Primula Brandybuck, drowned in a boating accident when he was twelve.
Together they lived in a comfortable hobbit-hole in the village of Hobbiton. Because of Bilbo's extreme wealth (which he gifted to Frodo after he left for Rivendell), neither of them needed to work for money.
Frodo, therefore, spent his days reading books, smoking pipe-weed, and enjoying the simple pleasures of hobbit life.
Frodo and Bilbo were not the only hobbits to lead such privileged lives in the Shire. Other hobbit characters featured in the books, including Merry Brandybuck and Pippin Took, also came from wealthy origins.
Merry was heir to the Mastership of Brandybuck Hall. And Pippin's family were also incredibly rich, supposedly more so than Bilbo in fact.
Out of the three friends, Samwise Gamgee was the only of them who needed to work and was employed by Frodo as a gardener.
Unfortunately, Frodo's life changed forever when he came into possession of the One Ring. The Ring, created by the Dark Lord Sauron to control and enslave all the peoples of Middle-earth, came to him as a possession from Bilbo.
When Gandalf discovered its true nature and connection to Sauron, he realized that it must be destroyed to save Middle-earth from the darkness.
Frodo was chosen to undertake this perilous task, to set out on his quest to destroy the Ring in the fires of Mount Doom.
Before his journey, Frodo's job was to live a peaceful and simple life in the Shire like many other hobbits. He didn't have a formal job or occupation, but he was known for his hobbit-like qualities; such as his love for food, laughter, and good company.
Throughout his journey, Frodo matured and grew into a hero, revered by all the people of Middle-earth for his courage and determination.
Upon returning to the Shire, which he helped liberate from the forces of Saruman, Frodo briefly became Deputy Mayor. A position he held temporarily as the Shire was rebuilt.
Soon after he left for the underlying lands for the rest of his life, joined by Bilbo, Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel aboard an Elven ship across the sea.
