And we’ll explain to you why it’s a pity.

One of the audience’s favorite genres is western, without doubt. But even the hardcore fans can’t say for sure what it is that makes them fall in love with it in the first place. The captivating macho-cowboy stories that are intertwined with classy romances, or the landscapes and horse riding scenes…

Seems like it’s the mix of all that stuff that creates that special atmosphere on screen, the one you want to come back to. But the thing is that the genre is now transformed into many subgenres, with the most popular among them being neo-westers or weird westerns.

Let’s talk about the latter.

What Is a Weird Western Exactly?

Well, the perfect answer is given by Prime Video with its 2022 creation Outer Range. It’s the perfect combination of classic, traditional western mixing in with sci-fi mysteries that are yet to be fully explored.

There are many series that are continuing the legacy of the golden era shows, for example Yellowstone, Justified and even Walker. They all have traditional grounds, but are just set in modern days.

But what Prime Video wanted to introduce to the world is the weird western, to shake things up a bit and refresh the genre. So Outer Range was supposed to fill the purpose, with all its mysterious things going on, where the characters along with the viewers don’t exactly understand what the hell is going on.

The show follows a ranching family fighting to save their land (Yellowstone fans, how you’re doing?), but in a much wider universe. However, it seems that the show's writers went a bit overboard to create a strange story that ended up creating something... underwhelming?

“It is yet another Amazon Prime misfire and I dumped it halfway through episode 6. Outer Ranger is just so poorly written, meandering and dull. The show started great and then went nowhere really fast. It is a waste of a great cast,” Redditor mickeyflinn said.

Still, if you want to give the Outer Range a chance – it’s streaming on Prime Video.
