Wednesday's Viral Missed Casting Opportunity Would Actually Ruin the Show
Wednesday has taken Netflix by storm, becoming one of the most popular shows almost overnight.
The delightful re-imagining of the beloved character Wednesday Addams has proven itself a mainstay and earned itself a green light for a second season. It should come as no surprise to anyone that several fan videos have gone viral, expressing their love for the show, and some criticisms.
One fan-opinion video has gone wild on Instagram, earning equal measures of praise and rage. But those speaking out against it, appear to have some very eloquent arguments behind them.
The video argues that the casting of Gomez Addams represents a missed opportunity. Posted by user @ambrose, it suggests Oscar Isaac would have been a better choice for the role than Luis Guzman. It seems the focus of the video is on the attractiveness of Isaac, and how much @ambrose feels the show would be improved by his hunky presence.
Looking at certain photos of Isaac, particularly ones where he has a Gomez-like moustache, it is hard to argue that he would not suit the role perfectly.
But that is exactly what many people have done in the comments, even going so far as to suggest that having cast Isaac in the role instead of Guzman would have completely ruined the show.
These fans call everyone's attention to the comics, which depict Gomez as not being "traditionally" handsome, but his beauty is in how he treats his loved ones. Not far away from this notion is the concept that Gomez and his wife, Morticia, have the perfect relationship because it is based on true love, not only looks.
Those in camp Guzman also reminds the audience that Wednesday is a show from the perspective of Gomez's teenage daughter. We see Gomez as he appears to Wednesday. Casting someone in the role purely for their attractive appearance, considered from this perspective, would just be straight-up weird. And Guzman's unique appearance so perfectly matches the overall style of the show.
Finally, fans have highlighted that having an impossibly handsome actor cast as Gomez would have taken all the attention away from the titular character. This is Wednesday's show, not Gomez's. And it is Wednesday that has become an overnight pop culture sensation due to the focus being mainly on her, and the brilliant performance from the actress that portrays her, Jenna Ortega.
