The drought of Star Wars movies is set to continue for a few more years.

After Rogue Squadron was moved off the release schedule, the movie most likely to eventually end it is the secret Star Wars movie project, led creatively by Damon Lindelof (co-creator of Lost and executive producer for the Watchmen HBO series).

Of course, as the project is secret, few details about it are available so far. We know that people such as Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Justin Britt-Gibson are involved in writing for it. We know that there was a "secret writers room" for the movie, which held a two-week session this July.

We know that actual filming had not yet started, so this yet-unnamed movie is quite unlikely to be released before 2025. This simple calculation is confirmed by the fact that December 2025 is the earliest date Disney has carved out on its calendar for a Star Wars movie release.

Information besides that mostly amounts rumors from unnamed "sources", so take it with the grain of salt, particularly as at this stage everything is subject to change. The movie project is supposed to be a stand-alone, as opposed to the Star Wars tradition of making trilogies but its success could lead to more movies. It is also said that the story would take place after the events of 2019's Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, although it would not be a continuation of the Skywalker saga.

The Wait for the Next Star Wars Movie Will Be Ridiculously Long

However, some characters from the sequel trilogy could appear in this movie. Presumably as secondary characters or even cameos – there is no indication that the movie is going to be a spin-off, focusing on one of them. So, fans of Rey, Finn and Poe can hold some hope of seeing them on the big screen again.

And if names of people working on this project do not inspire confidence for the future of Star Wars, if only because none of them had any experience with making big blockbusters before, consider that there are several more Star Wars movie projects in the works.

Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige is producing a film to be written by Loki 's Michael Waldron, while Thor: Love and Thunder 's filmmaker Taika Waititi has been developing his own movie for more than two years, with 1917's writer Krysty Wilson-Cairns writing. However, these appear to be in even earlier stages of development than Lindelof's project.
