Unpopular Opinion Claims Charlie Might Be the Worst Character on Supernatural
Unpopular opinions can make for some great reading.
They exist outside the norm and offer a fresh perspective on characters and shows. Supernatural has its fair share of unpopular opinions flying around, but Reddit has produced a doozy. That the much beloved and fan favourite Charlie Bradbury is the worst character on the show.
The poster has some scathing words to describe Charlie, however, the main criticism seems to stem from their view that she is a typical "Mary Sue" character.
For the uninitiated, a "Mary Sue" is colloquial slang for a fictional character that is so lacking in flaws they are ridiculously unrealistic. The Reddit user lists the various things that Charlie is seemingly an expert in, such as hacking, shooting, and charming people. Add to that she cannot be cloned and can hunt successfully solo, and it is apparent the writers wanted Charlie to be as flawless as possible.
While some users in the thread have leapt to Charlie's defence, others have echoed the negative sentiment. Some refer to her as being shallow and boring, and some take the hate train even further by verbally attacking Felicia Day, the actress that portrays her. This is where fans seemed to draw the line, feeling this was a step too far and responding in support of Day.
But the dislike for Charlie continued to rage on in the thread, with the criticism turning to the writers for making the character too uninteresting. That by not giving her character true depth and flaws to work on, they did her a disservice and failed to create someone the audience could truly get behind. That Charlie ultimately felt flat and pointless and overall contributed nothing of real value to the show.
Further, some Reddit users have replied advising of similar threads speaking out against Charlie and their loathing of the character. A quick glance reveals that this "unpopular opinion" is actually perhaps more common than many would think. There is still no shortage of fans that love Charlie, and she will continue to be a fan favourite. But there is no denying that she seems to have almost as many haters as she does supporters.
The overall vibe is that Charlie's perfection works against her and ironically becomes her biggest flaw. That she was depicted by the writers to be such a typical "hot girl nerd" she became ultimately, boring.
