Unlikely Reboot Show Steals Netflix's Top Spot from The Witcher
If we were to place our bets on Henry Cavill’s last The Witcher season of an underdog TV series reboot of a 10-year-old novel movie adaptation, we would’ve bet wrong.
If you’re anything like us, you would’ve expected the last season of The Witcher starring Henry Cavill to maintain its #1 spot in the Netflix rating for quite some time. But we were apparently underestimating the power of nostalgia and last-minute farewells as The Witcher’s S3 just lost its gold and was moved down the pedestal.
The show that took its place is quite unlikely when you think about it: it’s a TV series reboot of a 10-year-old movie that was created as a novel adaptation. No one bet on it, but the show’s sheer quality won the audience’s hearts over — as it should be.
We’re talking about The Lincoln Lawyer. The first part of its S2 came out just a week after the first part of The Witcher’s S3, and recently, it came out on top of the Netflix rating becoming its most-viewed show of the last week. This is a huge feat on its own considering the scale of Netflix’s audience, and the competitor only adds to it.
It’s actually the third time The Lincoln Lawyer saw such success with its audience. The original novel series by Michael Connelly became a hit; then, the 2011’s movie adaptation starring Matthew McConaughey came out and earned the public’s love; now, the new TV series is seemingly becoming the new fan-favorite.
The Lincoln Lawyer by Netflix already has great average scores on Rotten Tomatoes from both critics and viewers (82% and 83%, respectively) — and a whole bunch of praising reviews. While the show hasn’t blown up quite as loud as it should’ve, we can definitely say that it’s both successful and loved by the audience.
We can’t exactly say that about The Witcher these days: after all the drama, Henry Cavill’s exit, and the horrible source material adaptation that we saw in the first two seasons, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, and the fact that The Witcher’s S3 lost its sweet spot on the top so soon is just another indication of the show’s troubles.
