Two How I Met Your Mother Actors Knew The Biggest Secret From S1
It was a smart, but very risky decision from the production team.
How I Met Your Mother has become a classic sitcom over the years, the one that everyone watches and references no matter what they thought of the finale.
Though the ending was controversial, many agree that they don't feel the show's quality diminished as a result.
It may have been the consistency of the storytelling that held it together so well: after all, the writers knew exactly what was going to happen from the very first season of the show, and they stuck to it.
They were not the only ones to know, however, as two other members of the cast were allowed to indulge in the truth during the filming of season 1.
You won't believe that the ones who are supposed to learn the truth at the very end actually had to find out first.
Lyndsy Fonseca and David Henrie, who played the children on the show, were supposed to be shown in these little sequences at the beginning of each episode throughout the show.
However, the casting directors did not think this through with Henrie, as he was going through puberty at the time season 1 was filmed and was rapidly changing in appearance.
If they didn't want to see a boy grow into a man over the course of a year, they had to come up with a solution and do it quickly.
So they came up with the idea of shooting every scene in season 1 and using it over the years.
"We signed a confidentiality agreement saying that we would not say who the mother is. They also didn't know how many years the show was going to go. They filmed the ending of the show then just to have it," Fonseca recalls.
Turns out she didn't even remember the thing she signed at the end of the series. So, technically, the ending wasn't spoiled for her either, but Henrie says he remembers it well.
