True Relief: Cult Vampire Drama Is Not Getting a Reboot (For The Best Reason Possible)
Not every TV hit should be dug up from its grave and resurrected. True Blood, one of the most popular vampire series ever, sends a clear signal that some former hit shows should just stay buried.
The dark fantasy series revolved around mind-reading waitress Sookie (Anna Paquin) who has been increasingly drawn into the brutal world of the supernatural in the state of Louisiana, alongside people and magical creatures of all sorts.
The series also starred Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgård, Rutina Wesley, Deborah Ann Wall, Joe Manganiello, and many more.
Alan Ball's (Six Feet Under) cult HBO series, which saw vampires step out of the shadows thanks to the invention of synthetic blood, has run for seven seasons from 2008-2014.
This adaptation of Charlaine Harris' Southern Vampire Mysteries book series has attracted positive reviews and scored several major TV awards during its first five seasons. Fans agree though that "the last 2 seasons were pretty terrible."
All in all, a reboot of the series was announced two years ago. As we have learned now, the fantasy return has been canceled, and the rationale behind this decision is refreshingly honest.
Two years ago, HBO CEO Casey Bloys emphasized that the True Blood reboot first had to find a story worth telling. Now we know that the search for a fresh and valid narrative idea has produced nothing.
People at HBO have reportedly had several drafts prepared for a script of a potential True Blood reboot. But as Casey Bloys put it when talking with Variety, they found "nothing that felt like it got there."
In all fairness, admitting candidly that there's no idea worth of a reboot is much better then having a mediocre one that just desecrates the original's legacy.
A True Blood reboot idea doesn't fly well with fans, either. Most agreed that milking the original vampire series could only hurt it. After all, the very original series "hasn't aged" yet. And the word on the street is that original casting is "perfection."
"I'm confused why something would be rebooted in 8 years….they really won't be able to beat the original cast nostalgia," Redditor Emergency_Toe6915 says.
There we have it. Turns out, cash grab ideas can be in fact put against creative integrity, for the latter to overcome.
